Defining Headwear
Learn some of the basic terminology used for our cap styles.
Profile
The profile refers to the crown height of the cap above the visor. There are generally three types of cap profiles:
Low-Profile | Medium/Mid-Profile | High-Profile
Structure
A baseball cap can have buckram or stiff fabric behind the front two panels of the crown giving it structure—therefore, it is called a structured hat. An unstructured cap has no additional support behind those front two panels. If you take a cap off your head and set it down on a flat surface, a structured hat will continue to look the same and generally keep its shape. An unstructured cap will collapse slightly without your head in the hat supporting it.
Closure
Adjustable baseball caps have closures on the back of the caps that allow you to adjust the size. Types of closures include:
- Adjustable plastic snap tab, sometimes referred to as a snap back
- Fabric strap with two-piece hook & loop closure
- Stretchable hook & loop closure
- Fabric strap with antique sliding buckle
